What Actually Happens When You Apply for Credit

A friendly walkthrough of the process — hard search, soft search, affordability, decisions.

Applying for credit feels like a black box. It isn't — it's just a checklist most lenders run in the same order. Here's what's happening behind the "please wait" spinner.

The 30-second overview

You submit a form. The lender pings a credit bureau, runs an affordability check against the details you gave (and often your open banking data), scores the result, and returns a decision. Most of it takes seconds.

What each check does to your file

A soft search is invisible to other lenders and never affects your score. A hard search is recorded on your file for 12 months and is visible to everyone. One or two hard searches in a year is normal. Six is a red flag.

"A soft search is a peek. A hard search leaves a footprint."

How multiple applications add up

Lenders don't just look at each hard search in isolation — they look at the pattern. Five applications in a fortnight suggests desperation, and their models react accordingly. Space applications out, and only apply where an eligibility check says you have a strong chance.

When it's safe to reapply

If you've been declined, the standard advice is to wait 30 to 90 days before applying again — long enough for your file to settle and for you to fix whatever caused the decline. Reapplying the next day almost never works, and it costs you another hard search.
