I Need Credit But I've Been Refused — What Now?

Rejection isn't the end of the road. Here's what to try, in what order.

Getting a "no" stings — but it's rarely the final word. Lenders decline for lots of reasons, and most of them are fixable within a few weeks. Here's the playbook I give friends when they land in the "refused" pile.

Why lenders refuse

Refusals usually come down to one of three things: your credit file has recent negative markers, your affordability doesn't add up on paper, or the lender's model just doesn't like your profile for the product you applied for. Knowing which of the three is happening changes what you do next.

"It's almost never personal. It's a model deciding whether the maths works."

The affordability lane

If you were declined for affordability, no amount of credit-file polishing will fix it in the short term. Look at your monthly income minus your fixed outgoings — lenders want to see comfortable headroom, not a tight squeeze. Sometimes borrowing less, or over a longer term, flips a "no" to a "yes".

Reading your credit file for free

You are entitled to see your file for free from all three UK bureaux (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion). Check for wrong addresses, closed accounts still showing as open, and any defaults you don't recognise. Disputes are free and often resolved within a month.

Applying without a hard search

Most reputable lenders now offer a soft-search "eligibility check" that tells you your chance of approval without leaving a footprint. Use them. A cluster of hard searches in a short window is one of the fastest ways to tank your score.

Products designed for refused customers

Credit-builder cards, guarantor loans, and specialist bad-credit lenders exist precisely for this scenario. Rates are higher — that's the trade — but used sensibly for six to twelve months they can rebuild your file enough to unlock mainstream products again.
